Americans Urged to Donate Blood and Platelets as Hurricane Matthew Cancels Blood Drives

Hurricane Matthew has forced the cancellations of many blood drives along the Southeast coast of the U.S., impacting the nation’s blood supply. The AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism is urging eligible donors across America, particularly platelet donors and those with type O, especially type O negative blood, to make and keep donation appointments as soon as possible. FDA Revises Zika Testing Requirements for Blood and Components

Final guidance recommendations include testing all blood donations collected in the United States and its territories for Zika. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final guidance regarding testing for Zika virus in blood and blood components to reduce the risk of transmission by transfusion. Underway in 21 countries worldwide this week, the campaign seeks to raise awareness for the need for all blood types during the challenging summer season. Alliance for Aviation Across America Announces America’s Blood Centers as Members

The Alliance for Aviation Across America today announced that America’s Blood Centers will be officially joining the Alliance and working with the group to raise awareness about the critical importance of general aviation as a tool that helps transport the nation’s blood supply. America’s Blood Centers is North America’s largest network of community-based, independent blood programs representing more than 600 blood donor centers nationwide. America’s Blood Centers to Host Medical Device Data Systems (MDDS) Workshop

America’s Blood Centers is set to host an unprecedented Medical Device Data Systems (MDDS) Workshop on January 15-16, 2014 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Silver Spring in the Washington, DC area. This workshop will review recently issued MDDS requirements and discuss their effects on blood centers and other impacted healthcare institutions, as well as provide direction on implementation of the Food and Drug Administration guidance requirements. Participants will learn what an MDDS is; the regulatory requirements for their development, validation and approval; and how to navigate FDA device inspections and development in a quality systems environment.
