Recognize Students' Lifesaving Impact

As the back-to-school season approaches, students have a unique opportunity to make a significant impact through giving blood and supporting the nation's blood supply. School-based drives are the backbone of the blood supply in America and are instrumental in securing many of the roughly 7 million blood donors who give each year.

About Students and Blood Donation

Students play a vital role in ensuring a sustainable blood supply for those in need. By hosting and giving blood at blood drives, students contribute to the availability of blood products that are essential for saving lives in emergencies, surgeries, and various medical treatments.

By engaging with their peers and raising awareness about the importance of blood donation, students help ensure that their local communities have access to life-saving blood products when needed.

Encouraging student donations can diversify the blood supply: With nearly half of post-Millennials identifying as racial or ethnic minorities, engaging students is crucial. However, current data shows a decline in donations from 16-24 year-olds, highlighting the need to motivate younger generations to donate early and consistently for a sustainable donor base diversity.

Advocating for a Strong and Diverse Blood Supply

Fostering a strong and diverse donor base among young people is essential for a sustainable blood supply in the future. Our Advocacy Agenda strives to make blood donation a national priority, including through supporting policies designed to increase diversity in the donor pool, particularly among younger donors. This includes supporting  investments for research on the social and psychological factors that motivate young people to donate blood to help attract and retain younger donors, ensuring the long-term stability of the blood supply.

There is an immediate need for lawmakers to make supporting the blood supply a national priority. While the majority of independent, community-based blood centers are currently able to meet patient needs, every two seconds in the U.S., someone needs blood. With only three percent of Americans donating blood each year, we need to grow and diversify America’s donor base to ensure blood products are available for all those who depend on it.
