About this Change
In accordance with these new FDA guidelines, a modified screening process has been implemented centering on an individualized donor assessment. The FDAβs prior guidance included donor eligibility questions that considered the gender of a donor and their sexual partners and required a three-month deferral for any male who has had sex with another male in the past three months.
Upholding Safety
These changes allow more people to give blood while maintaining the safety of the blood supply. Ensuring the safety of the nationβs blood supply is the top priority for Americaβs Blood Centers and the entire blood community. Multiple layers of safety are in place to protect those that rely on blood transfusions.
To maintain the highest degree of safety, all U.S. blood centers are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and must adhere to following donor eligibility policies and safeguards.
