America’s Blood Centers brings together its members to coordinate efforts in advocating for state-based policy initiatives that support the vital work of community blood centers, increase access to blood products, and strengthen the donor base. This collaborative approach helps champion local policies nationwide that promote equitable access to blood products and support patient care.

We strongly urge local leaders to consider donating blood if they are eligible to emphasize its importance and motivate others to do the same. Organizing blood drives, utilizing social media platforms to increase awareness, and leveraging their influence can significantly boost blood donation in local communities.

In addition, we work together to advance the following state-based priorities:

Supporting Community Blood Centers: We promote policies that empower community blood centers in their important and lifesaving work, including strengthening their local blood supply and increasing blood donor diversity to help meet the needs of patients in communities across the country. Many federal initiatives included in ABC's federal Advocacy Agenda can be localized at the state level. 

Enabling Employee Blood Donation: We encourage local leaders to champion policies that enable employees to take time off work for donating blood. This simple act can significantly contribute to the stability of the blood supply, positively impacting countless lives. 

Expanding Access to Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusions: We strongly support measures designed to expand access to blood transfusions before patients reach the hospital. Advocating for Medicaid reimbursement and for paramedics to have the authority in their scope of practice to initiate crucial blood transfusions has the ability to help save lives.

Promoting Blood Education in Schools: We urge local leaders to advocate for the integration of Vein to Vein into schools nationwide. This comprehensive and interactive blood supply curriculum aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards and enables educators to effortlessly incorporate crucial lessons on the blood supply into their teaching plans. This will help build the next generation of lifelong blood donation.

By advocating for these measures, we aim to ensure that all patients can receive the life-saving transfusions they need when they need them.
